ABOUT THE FORUM
As the private sector plays a vital role in job-creation and prosperity, the Organization of American States (OAS) General Secretariat supports the business community’s efforts to contribute ideas and initiatives that pursue the goals of enhanced economic growth, prosperity and poverty reduction in the Hemisphere and that complement the actions taken by the OAS Member States and development institutions.
As a follow-up to the First OAS Private Sector Forum, the Government of the Republic of Argentina and the OAS General Secretariat (SEDI/Department of Trade, Tourism and Competitiveness) with the leadership of Argentine business leaders and private sector representatives from the Western Hemisphere, organized the Hemispheric Private Sector Forum “Delivering the Benefits of Democracy Through Job Creation: The Role of the Private Sector”, in Buenos Aires, on November 2, on occasion of the IV Summit of the Americas. The Forum brought together leaders from the public and private sectors of the Americas with the objective of exploring and assessing public-private sector initiatives and strategies to promote job creation, with a view to contributing to deliver the benefits of democracy. Over 600 business leaders from throughout the Americas, high-level government representatives of the Hemisphere, as well as international financial institutions and cooperation were represented. The meeting launched a process for the creation of a Private Sector Forum, within the framework of the Organization of American States, to formulate recommendations in order to improve the conditions of investment, competitiveness, job creation, and to consolidate democracy in the Hemisphere. The conclusions and recommendations of the Forum were communicated to the governments of the Hemisphere during the Meeting of the Private Sector with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs at the IV Summit of the Americas, in Mar del Plata, on November 4th, 2005.
