ABOUT THE FORUM
As the private sector plays a vital role in job-creation and prosperity, the Organization of American States (OAS) General Secretariat supports the business community’s efforts to contribute ideas and initiatives that pursue the goals of enhanced economic growth, prosperity and poverty reduction in the Hemisphere and that complement the actions taken by the OAS Member States and development institutions.
The OAS General Secretariat, through its Department of Trade, Tourism and Competitiveness, organized the First OAS Private Sector Forum entitled “Delivering the Benefits of Democracy Through Increased Competitiveness,” on June 5, 2005, in the context of the XXXV General Assembly in Ft. Lauderdale, with the support of the U.S. Departments of State and Commerce. Over 100 private sector representatives from throughout the Americas gathered at the Forum to provide recommendations to the GA on the following three topics:
- Improving Competitiveness and Productivity Via Education and Technology;
- Promoting Good Governance and Transparency; and
- Innovative Strategies for Job Creation.
The recommendations were communicated to the GA and are registered in document AG/INF.368/05.
