OAS Social Protection Internship in Chile
The Organization of American States (OAS) will conduct a Social Protection Internship in Santiago, Chile October 26 to November 3, 2009. The internship represents a critical activity in the second phase of the program “Puente in the Caribbean Program” which is currently being implemented by the Department of Social Development and Employment in collaboration with the Chilean Solidarity and Social Investment Fund (FOSIS). The two year program is funded by the Government of Chile as part of a broader cooperation initiative in support of the Caribbean region. It seeks to strengthen social protection strategies in the Caribbean, utilizing the Chile Puente program as a model.
To this end, the Internship will bring together social protection agents from Barbados, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. The primary objective is to share in a systematic manner, the knowledge, procedures and experiences of the Chile Puente Program with social protection agents from the Caribbean. The ten-day capacity building activity will involve lectures, discussions with program implementers and small group workshops. Additionally, the Caribbean interns will conduct field visits to communities, institutions and families that have benefited from the Chile Puente Program in the regions of Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins and Valparaiso. Through activities such as this Internship, the Puente in the Caribbean Program contributes directly to the realization of the goals of the OAS Inter-American Social Protection Network which was recently launched in New York City.
