The Organization of
American States promotes the participation of workers in its spaces of dialogue
and decision making. Since 1963 the labor organizations, through the Trade Union
Technical Advisory Council (COSATE),
the
permanent
consultative body of the Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labor (IACML),
have had the opportunity to intervene and influence in the debates on labor issues
at the regional level.
In 2007, the Member States decided to elevate this participation to the highest
level forums within the Organization, therefore, since 2008 workers participate
in forums such as the General Assembly and the Summit of the Americas as you can
read below.
Within the framework of the IACML, COSATE provides technical advice to the IACML on the planning and execution of programs that have special significance for workers and involve their participation in development activities at both the national and the international level.
It is composed by one representative of labor organizations of each of the
Member States of the OAS, and currently its Chair is Francisco Quijano,
representative of the
Central Autónoma de Trabajadores Salvadoreños (CATS), elected at the XVII IACML held in San Salvador, El Salvador, in October
2011.
