RECENT INITIATIVES

Specialized training for Central American trade officials on how to transform non-conforming measures on services and investment made in their free trade agreements to commitments using the positive list approach as proposed in the Central America-European Union  negotiations , in  San José , Costa Rica (September 23-25, 2007). Organized with the support of the Ministeries of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica and Chile

SICE's Trade Policy Developments section centralizes official public documents - including press releases, draft texts of agreements, and supplementary documents - following developments in current trade negotiations in the Americas.
 

 

HIGHLIGHTS

•  Pilot Roundtable
- Top exercise on the Multi-hazard Contingency Plan for the Caribbean Tourism Sector, February 2007.

•  OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza joins Caribbean envoys testifying at the US International Trade Commission hearing in support of extension of the Caribbean Basin Trade Partnership Act.
The renewal and the expansion of the CBTPA will be critical for the beneficiary countries in enhancing their competitiveness and achieving long term economic growth and development.

The Trade Division is supporting the set up of the Centre de Facilitation des Investissements in Haiti.

The Tourism Division will finalize and release the Multi-hazard Contingency Plan Manual for the Caribbean Tourism Sector. This is being developed in collaboration with the Caribbean Disaster Response Agency (CDERA), the Caribbean Tourism Organization and the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA).

• Participation in the Aid for Trade Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean. Lima, Peru. September 12-14, 2007.

• Participation in the Third Meeting of the Red Latinoamericana para el Desarrollo de la MIPYME Turística, co-sponsored by the Servicio Nacional de Turismo of Chile and the OAS. Santiago, Chile, August 9-10, 2007.

• Seminar for CARICOM Parliamentarians on “Shaping a Trade Agenda to Promote Regional Integration and Competitiveness for CARICOM: The EPA and Other Negotiating Challenges”. Organized by the OAS, the World Bank and the Government of St. Lucia. Held in St. Lucia on May 17, 2007.








The Department of Trade and Tourism added a new website to its Portal, the OECS Investment Gateway. It provides information on key elements of the investment climate in six Members States of the OECS.
On June 16-17, 2008 the Department of Trade and Tourism (DTT) and the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD), convened a high-level Symposium on Aid for Trade for the Caribbean in Kingston, Jamaica with Caribbean government officials, private sector representatives and donor agencies.
The Department of Trade and Tourism of the Organization of American States (OAS) co-hosted with the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) the IPRTA Forum Mexico 08 Conference held in the Sheraton Centro Histórico Hotel in Mexico City, Mexico on 9-11 July 2008.  

The OAS and the University of the West Indies (Cave Hill) sponsored a Symposium on Caribbean Services Exports.
PRESS ARTICLES FROM THE EVENT:

The OAS, in cooperation with the Government of Colombia and business leaders from the Hemisphere, is organizing the V OAS Private Sector Forum, to be held in Medellin, Colombia on May 29-30, 2008.
  The Department of Trade and Tourism, the World Trade Organization and George Washington University Law School are offering a course on Multilateral and Regional Trade Issues for Latin American government officials, to be held in Washington, DC on July 7-18, 2008.

 

Institutional Strengthening on Trade-Related Issues for Haiti: Specialized Workshops in French on the WTO Multilateral System and regional trade issues, Market Access and Agriculture, Services, IPR, Investment, and Dispute Settlement in Port-au-Prince, Haiti (June-July 2008) with the support of FEMCIDI and CIDA.
