Computers for Communities in Latin America and the Caribbean

Representatives from the Organization of American States (OAS), the Institute for Connectivity in the Americas (ICA) and the International Development Research Center (IDRC) have concluded a visit to the 5 countries where pilot projects are being implemented: Guyana, Paraguay Jamaica, El Salvador, and Guatemala. The projects in each of these countries were selected to receive seed funding from the Computer for Communities program (CFC).
CFC is an initiative designed to provide refurbished computers to be used as tools to increase e-literacy and social inclusion. The program is supported by the OAS, ICA, and Industry Canada (IC).The visit supported the projects by offering recommendations and helping them design strategies to improve
their development. It also increased awareness of the importance of closing the digital gap, and of including new partners from the public and private sectors in order to improve teaching processes and the level of education.
To date, the seed funding has produced excellent results for each of the pilot projects.
Computers for Schools - Guyana , directed by the Ministry of Education it has reached 56 public schools with the incorporation of 560 refurbished computers, benefiting 10,400 students from 10 different regions of the country.
Computers for Communities - Jamaica , directed by the Ministry of Education it has trained young people in Information Technology, computer maintenance and repair, and an additional component in entrepreneurship. To date, the program has benefited 48 students from Kingston and Montego Bay.
Computadores para mi Escuela - El Salvador, directed by the Ministry of Education and the Centro American Technology Institute (ITCA), this initiative has benefited 19,390 students from 59 schools with the delivery of 492 refurbished computers. It is expected to deliver a total of 15,000 by 2009, and thus grow to a national level. http://www.conectate.gob.sv/computadoras.html
Tecnología para Educar - Guatemala, This is a multisectorial alliance, with an innovative vision, where it is important to highlight the leadership of Fundación Sergio Paíz. To date, it has benefited 57,090 students in 173 schools with 2,093 delivered computers in 20 different departments. http://www.tecnologiaparaeducar.org/
Al rescate de las Computadoras This initiative has been executed by the National University of Paraguay , and thanks to its facilities and the student population, has a high potential for growth and expansion. To date, it has benefited 120 students with the acquisition of 80 refurbished computers, from 453 donated computers.
