SEDI / OSE - Oficina del Secretario Ejecutivo

The Office of the Executive Secretary (OES)

The Office of the Executive Secretary is responsible for defining strategic and political guidelines for integral development and of promoting coordinating, managing and facilitating the execution of cooperation for development programs, projects and activities. Likewise, it coordinates the different efforts of the six departments that make up the SEDI and directs the formulation of policies and Inter-American integral development projects to be executed in education and culture; science and technology; trade, tourism and competitiveness; sustainable development; and, social development and employment.

In addition to its coordination tasks, the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) actively works in several important programs to support the state modernization efforts and to increase SEDI's cooperation possibilities. The OES has developed successful and efficient mechanisms to enlist the collaboration of private firms, and regional and academic institutions in support of specific areas. This collaboration places a strong emphasis on the efficient use of existing projects and resources to create productive synergies among our partners and beneficiaries; it promotes the exchange of successful practices and the intelligent application of information and communication technologies (ICT); as well as training and capacity building activities as key factors for development.

“The existence of effective, efficient and transparent governmental institutions is essential for development”

The OES offers the Member Status of the Organization of American States (OAS) a series of products and services to support their efforts to modernize and increase their effectiveness. Its activities focus on the identification of innovative strategies and tools that have proven their efficiency for the promotion of sustainable development in their respective countries or the region. The specific areas of action are:

In addition to identifying ‘solutions for development', the OES coordinates the creation and production of a series of products and services designed to stimulate the implementation of horizontal cooperation programs, and the participation of the private sector. The logic behind horizontal cooperation programs is that governments can avoid “reinventing the wheel' and maximize their investment and increase their efficiency in different levels and areas.
